Six Hairstylists from Randolph’s Salon Sharpen Skills at

Allstate Insurance Agent Karen McMurray has received the company’s Agency Hands in the Community Award for volunteerism in the community. With this award comes a $500 grant from The Allstate Foundation to the Polish American Charitable Fund for Children, where McMurray volunteers.  Read more

August 12, 2009  Dixie Corridor Task Force Status Update

Last Spring many business owners participated in an Independence Township task force to find ways to encourage business development, specifically on the Dixie Corridor.

The Planning Commission supported the initiatives and presented the information to the Independence Township Board.    While Sam Moraco no longer chairs the Planning Commission or the Task Force, Ron Ritchie has stepped forward to keep the Task Force initiatives going.  Curt Carson, Independence Township Treasurer has also continued as an active participant.  The ideas and initiatives are continuing to progress.   

STATUS REPORT on the Business Development recommendations.  

  1. Temporary signage for all of Independence Township
    1. Businesses can come in and apply for a one year permit for $50.00
    2. This permit allows them to display the sign for 14 consecutive days, 4 times a year
  2. Non-conforming signs for all of Independence Township
    1. Businesses or property owners can replace a non-conforming sign with a conforming sign and not have to pay any permit fees
    2. This option is available through December 31, 2010
  3. Capital connection charges for all of Independence Township
    1. May be amortized up to ten years
    2. Quarterly payments
    3. Low interest rate
  4. Commercial Rehabilitation District for Dixie Highway
    1. Will be presented to the Board for approval on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 7:30pm
    2. The district will include all eligible properties in the corridor
    3. Owners may apply for tax abatements on improvements to their buildings
    4. Abatement applies to improvement portion
    5. Abatement may be for up to ten years
  5. Preliminary approval for signage at each end of Dixie Hwy promoting the corridor
