The 2022 Pinwheels for Prevention Program
By Clarkston Area Youth Assistance Pinwheels for Prevention Program Committee
Each April, starting in 2016, blue pinwheels begin to bloom all over the Clarkston community, through April’s sunshine, showers, and occasional snowflakes. Clarkston Area Youth Assistance (CAYA) coordinates for the Clarkston community, the Pinwheels for Prevention nationwide campaign—April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, along with Clarkston’s local Pinwheels for Prevention campaign that is aligned with interests in proactively promoting the health and well-being of our children and youth. Last year 1500 blue pinwheels were planted in 62 gardens across the community by our dedicated Pinwheel supporters, neighbors, friends, and sponsors. The Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce has planted pinwheel gardens since 2016.
There are many ways to engage in April is Blue Pinwheel Month. When you are walking about town on a warm sunny day, look for the spinning blue pinwheels, sparkling in the sunshine. Even better, stop to look at the Pinwheel signs, in gardens large and small—added to make the pinwheels more meaningful and interactive, for example: Blue pinwheels remind me to help youth feel safe, hopeful, and welcomed throughout the community. We invite you to consider planting your own pinwheel garden that supports programs and projects to help prevent and mitigate child and adolescent adversity in all of its forms.
