April is Blue Pinwheel Month in the Clarkston Community!

The 2022 Pinwheels for Prevention Program

By Clarkston Area Youth Assistance Pinwheels for Prevention Program Committee

Each April, starting in 2016, blue pinwheels begin to bloom all over the Clarkston community, through April’s sunshine, showers, and occasional snowflakes. Clarkston Area Youth Assistance (CAYA) coordinates for the Clarkston community, the Pinwheels for Prevention nationwide campaign—April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, along with Clarkston’s local Pinwheels for Prevention campaign that is aligned with interests in proactively promoting the health and well-being of our children and youth.  Last year 1500 blue pinwheels were planted in 62 gardens across the community by our dedicated Pinwheel supporters, neighbors, friends, and sponsors. The Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce has planted pinwheel gardens since 2016.

There are many ways to engage in April is Blue Pinwheel Month. When you are walking about town on a warm sunny day, look for the spinning blue pinwheels, sparkling in the sunshine. Even better, stop to look at the Pinwheel signs, in gardens large and small—added to make the pinwheels more meaningful and interactive, for example: Blue pinwheels remind me to help youth feel safe, hopeful, and welcomed throughout the community. We invite you to consider planting your own pinwheel garden that supports programs and projects to help prevent and mitigate child and adolescent adversity in all of its forms. KNOW THAT EACH OF US IS EMPOWERED TO HELP DEVELOP INDIVIDUAL AND COMMUNITY  WELL-BEING, WHERE CHILDREN AND YOUTH CAN FLOURISH!

The Rainforest Gives Back Program is brand new this year. We used to have a fundraising program that was similar but we weren’t seeing anyone utilizing it. I was chosen by our Vice President of Restaurants to be on a team to rework the program. We completely rebranded. A new name, new images, and just a better program that allows us to give more back to the non-profit organizations to continue their amazing work in our local communities. We are doing something extra special for the Down Syndrome Guild as well.

Our SCAMP participation has spanned two years, this being our first as the host event, to help with their fundraising efforts to support kids and adults with special needs at the summer camp which last for five weeks.

I would like to first thank the chamber for acknowledging the Red Cross drive I am hosting.  It is so important for community members to come and give a very vital part of what is needed to heal and give hope to so many people who need this resource.  This is my third year to host a Red Cross blood drive and is always rewarding.  I hope that those who can will turn out and donate.  I have been a chamber member for a number of years.  Currently a board Member and past President.  It is an organization that focuses on relationships in business and the community. I have met people that I would

Emilia is a 7th grader at Sherman middle school in Holly. In many ways she’s a typical 13 year old girl. She loves music, shopping and spending time with her friends. Emilia is also on the autism spectrum. She was first diagnosed as high functioning autistic at the age of 4. When she was first diagnosed her father and I were not sure what to expect for her as she grew. There was a lot of fear and grief for the life our beautiful girl wouldn’t have. Yet everyday we are amazed at her strength and her love of life.
